Overview and Scope

About Library

The UBS Icon Library is the primary icon resource for digital products at UBS, maintained by the UBS Design System team. Among all the libraries in the UBS environment, it sees the highest usage across products and platforms.

My responsibilities

I joined the UBS Design System team and stepped up as the primary maintainer of the library. That meant designing new icons, redesigning and refining existing ones, processing creation requests from other designers, and contributing to guidelines for icon creation and usage. I also handled handoffs to developers and helped ensure quality implementation across both mobile and desktop systems.

Highlight - UBS Mobile Banking App tab bar Icons

Problem

The bottom tab bar indicated the selected state solely through color changes on the icon and label. For colorblind users, this created a real accessibility gap and fell short of the required standards.

Approach

Following a competitor analisis I created several approaches, their visibility was tested across different conditions. The filled vs. outlined icon solution proved to be the clearest and most reliable, so that's what was used.

Impact

The updated tab bar improved the experience for colorblind users and brought the UBS mobile app closer to meeting accessibility standards for everyone.

New filled icons

The filled icons were designed to be clearly distinguishable from their regular counterparts without feeling heavy or visually overwhelming.
I also introduced slightly rounded corners, which gave them a warmer, more approachable feel. That rounding later became a consistent detail applied to other icons across the library.

Reflections

Reflections

Maintaining a library at this scale is mostly incremental work: processing requests, keeping naming consistent, making sure a new icon doesn't clash with dozens of existing ones. Some of it may fly under the radar, but that discipline is what keeps a system trustworthy. And sometimes a single small fix impacts the whole product ecosystem.
